WoW Forever Paladin PvP Guide
Paladins heal, tank or fight in melee but have no interrupt. In Forever every Paladin gets Holy Strike at level 6 and Consecration at level 20, and Judgement no longer uses up your Seal.
- PvP roles
- Healer (Holy) or melee damage (Retribution); Protection as a tank and defensive tree
- Alliance races
- Dwarf, Human
- Horde races
- Undead (new in Forever)
- Strengths
- A melee fighter that can also heal and shield allies; especially strong against Undead and Demons
- Weakness
- No interrupt, few ways to slow a target and few ranged attacks except against Undead and Demons
Paladin talents for PvP
Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. At the beta's level 30 cap you have 21 points, or a few more with the Legacy perk Talented: enough for a tree's 21-point talent, not its 31-point capstone. Dual Specialization opens at level 40.
Talent effects are from Blizzard's September 13 deep dive recap and later beta notes. Numbers, and the level under a talent (the first level that can take it), are from Wowhead's datamined Forever data checked October 12.
Holy: healing, Holy Shock and cast protection
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Voice of TruthLevel 20 | Immunity to Silence and interrupt effects for 6 seconds; 3-minute cooldown. |
| Reverence | 30% of your Mana regeneration continues while you cast. |
| Infusion of Light | A critical Holy Shock or Flash of Light makes your next Holy Light within 15 seconds cast 1 second faster. |
| Holy Power | 15% more critical strike chance for Holy Shock and Holy Strike, and 5% for your other spells. |
| Consecrated Ground | Enemies standing in your Consecration take more Holy damage. |
| Holy ShockLevel 30 | Instant Holy damage to an enemy or a heal on an ally, 10-second cooldown. Icy Veins places it 21 points into Holy, so you can reach it at the beta cap. |
| Light's VigilLevel 40 | Holy's capstone. Marks a target so your next Holy Shock on it has no cooldown and either deals extra Holy damage, returning 75% of Light's Vigil's Mana, or heals the target's whole party. |
Protection: shields and blocks
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Templar's BulwarkLevel 30 | A shield on yourself that absorbs damage equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 seconds; 5-minute cooldown. Applies Forbearance. |
| Iron CreedLevel 35 | While Righteous Fury is on, each Holy Strike cuts your damage taken by 15% for 6 seconds. |
| Swift Judgement | Once a minute, finishes Judgement's cooldown and makes your next Judgement free. |
| Improved Seal of Fury, Shield Specialization | Restore Mana when Seal of Fury's shield absorbs damage and when you block. October 15 sets Shield Specialization's return to 4%, with a 3-second internal cooldown. |
| Holy ShieldLevel 40 | Adds 30% block chance for 10 seconds or 4 blocks, with Holy damage on each block. |
| Redoubt | Melee hits on you have a 10% chance to raise your block chance by 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20% (by rank) for 10 seconds or 5 blocks. |
| Reckoning | A block or incoming critical strike can build a charge. October 15 changes it to store up to four charges; your next auto attack spends them together for one extra attack per charge. The earlier October 8 trigger limit does not describe this release timing. |
Retribution: Holy Strike and melee pressure
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sacred Arbiter | Holy Strike deals 20% more damage and refreshes every Judgement on the target. |
| Vindication | Your melee hits can lower the target's Attack Power and raise your own for 30 seconds. |
| Vengeance | After a non-periodic critical strike, you deal 5% more Physical and Holy damage for 30 seconds, stacking up to 3 times. |
| Champion of the Light | Adds spell damage equal to 10, 20 or 30% of your Intellect (October 15). It does not increase healing. |
| Twist of Light | Seals cost 20% less Mana. When you swap away from Seal of Command, Righteousness, Fury or Justice, your next swing still applies the old Seal. |
| Two-Handed Weapon Specialization | 2, 4 or 6% more damage with two-handed weapons. |
Two more level 20 talents have no known tree: Seal of Command (see Seals) and Repentance. Repentance incapacitates a Humanoid within 20 yards for up to 6 seconds (1-minute cooldown); any damage breaks it.
Which tree to play
- Holy is our starting pick for battlegrounds. Voice of Truth lets you finish a heal through interrupts, and 21 points reach Holy Shock, an instant heal that doubles as a ranged attack on any enemy. Reverence makes Spirit worth gearing for.
- Retribution suits melee pressure with a two-handed weapon. Sacred Arbiter keeps your Judgements on the target, and Vindication weakens the Warrior or Rogue you are fighting.
- Protection reaches Templar's Bulwark at level 30, a full-health shield for carrying a flag or holding a base. Iron Creed (level 35) and Holy Shield (level 40) make it a stronger second set once Dual Specialization opens.
Key Paladin abilities
October 15 separates Salvation and Mass Salvation from Blessings, so they can coexist with a Blessing. The new Revoke removes them from a party or raid member. Seal of Fury rank 3 is now trained at level 26. Seal of Righteousness, its Judgement and Consecration received damage-scaling corrections; older damage estimates need a new check.
Unless an October 15 amendment is noted, values are the first rank from Wowhead's Forever database, datamined beta game data checked October 12; higher ranks last longer or hit harder.
| Ability | Level | Cooldown | Use it to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holy Strike | 6 | 10 sec | Hit for 25% weapon damage plus Holy damage (36% by level 28). New in Forever. |
| Judgement | 4 | 10 sec | Release your Seal's effect on an enemy within 10 yards. |
| Consecration | 20 | 8 sec | Damage enemies who enter the area around you for 8 seconds; the first four take extra damage. |
| Hammer of Justice | 8 | 1 min | Stun a target within 10 yards for 3 seconds (4 from level 24). Your main way to stop a cast. |
| Divine Protection | 6 | 5 min | Become immune to physical attacks and spells for 6 seconds (8 from level 18). You cannot attack or use physical abilities meanwhile. |
| Blessing of Protection | 10 | 5 min | Make a party member immune to physical attacks for 6 seconds (8 from level 24). They cannot attack either. |
| Blessing of Freedom | 18 | 20 sec | Make a friendly target immune to movement-impairing effects for 10 seconds. |
| Lay on Hands | 10 | 20 min | Heal a friendly target for your maximum health. It drains all your Mana. |
| Flash of Light | 20 | None | Heal a friendly target within 40 yards; 1.5-second cast. |
| Purify | 8 | None | Remove one poison and one disease from a friendly target. |
| Exorcism | 20 | 15 sec | Instant Holy damage from 30 yards to an Undead or Demon target, such as a Warlock's demon. |
| Turn Undead | 24 | 30 sec | After a 1.5-second cast, an Undead enemy flees for up to 10 seconds. Damage may break it. |
Divine Protection, Blessing of Protection, Templar's Bulwark and Divine Shield all apply Forbearance for 1 minute, and none of them works on someone who has it. After the beta cap, Divine Shield (level 34) makes you immune to all damage and spells for 10 seconds but halves the damage you deal. Cleanse (level 42) also removes a Magic effect.
How Seals, Judgement and auras work
A Seal lasts 30 seconds and changes what your melee swings do. Judgement releases its effect on an enemy and, in Forever, leaves the Seal on you. You can have one Seal and one Judgement active at a time, and your melee hits refresh a lasting Judgement.
| Seal | Level | Your swings | Judgement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seal of Righteousness | 1 | Extra Holy damage; slower weapons add more per hit. | Holy damage. |
| Seal of the Crusader | 6 | More Attack Power and 40% faster attacks, each hitting for less. | The target takes more Holy damage for 40 seconds. |
| Seal of Fury | 10 | Extra Holy damage; with a shield, each hit also gives you a small absorb shield. | Holy damage and a 4-second taunt. |
| Seal of CommandTalent | 20 | A chance of extra Holy damage equal to 70% of weapon damage. | Holy damage, doubled on a stunned or incapacitated target. |
| Seal of Justice | 22 | A chance to stun the target for 2 seconds. | Stops the target fleeing for 10 seconds. |
| Seal of Light | 30 | A chance to heal yourself. | For 40 seconds, melee attackers of the target can be healed. |
- Auras reach party members within 30 yards, one aura per Paladin. Devotion Aura (level 1) adds armor, and Concentration Aura (level 22) gives a 35% chance to ignore spell interruption from damage.
- Retribution Aura (level 16) deals Holy damage, plus 6% of your spell power, to anyone who hits a party member.
- Blessing of Kings (level 20) adds 10% to all stats for an hour. Each player can hold only one Blessing from you, so Freedom or Protection replaces your Kings on that player.
Best racials for a Paladin
Unchanged cooldowns are datamined Wowhead values checked October 12; the October 15 Blizzard update supplies the amendments below. The race guide compares every racial.
| Race | Racial | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Will to Survive (3 min) | Removes all stuns. Perception (3 min) helps you see stealthed enemies for 20 seconds. Ruthless adds 2% critical strike chance with any weapon. |
| Dwarf | Stoneform (3 min) | Removes and blocks bleeds, poisons and diseases, and cuts physical damage by 10% for 8 seconds. Earth Fury adds 2% critical damage and healing, replacing Mace Specialization. |
| Undead | Will of the Forsaken (2 min) | Removes Charm, Fear and Sleep, with no immunity afterwards. Cannibalize (2 min) restores 35% of your health and Mana over 10 seconds from a corpse, but not while you are immune to Physical damage. Since October 15, Will of the Forsaken is unavailable during Scatter Shot. |
Fight tips
- Against castersYou have no interrupt. Save Hammer of Justice for the cast that matters most, such as an enemy healer's big heal, and leave the rest to teammates who can interrupt.
- Against meleeDivine Protection stops your own attacks but not your spells, so heal yourself while it lasts. Blessing of Protection stops physical attacks on a party member, and a caster can keep casting under it.
- Against kitersYou have few ways to slow a target, and Judgement reaches only 10 yards. Stay with your group instead of chasing alone, use Blessing of Freedom when you are snared, and use Holy Shock if you have it.
- Against RoguesHumans can use Perception to spot a stealthed Rogue and Will to Survive to break a stun. Dwarves can Stoneform away poisons and bleeds, and Purify removes a poison from any ally.
- Protecting your teamPut Blessing of Freedom on your flag carrier each time it is ready. Keep Lay on Hands, which empties your Mana, for an ally who is about to die.
- Burst with Seal of CommandJudge with Seal of Command right after Hammer of Justice: its Judgement deals double damage to a stunned or incapacitated target.
