WoW Forever PvP Preparation
What to carry into battlegrounds and world PvP, and which Legacy perks help. In Forever, First Aid makes healing potions, Druids drink potions without leaving their form, and new SAF-T and EZ-Thro bombs are built for non-Engineers.
PvP trinket and rank rewards
Buy the PvP trinket first. The Greater Insignia of the Alliance or Horde unlocks at Rank 2 (Corporal or Grunt). It removes all movement-impairing and loss-of-control effects on you, on a 5-minute cooldown.
The Insignia clears effects already on you; its tooltip lists no immunity afterwards. A Free Action Potion does the opposite: 30 seconds of immunity to stuns and movement-impairing effects, but it does not remove ones already applied. Drink Free Action before you engage a Rogue or Warrior, and keep the Insignia for the stun you could not avoid.
Rank 5 (Sergeant Major or First Sergeant) unlocks combat potions. The Combat Healing Potion restores 700–900 health from level 35, and the Combat Mana Potion restores 900–1,500 Mana from level 41. Neither is usable at the beta's level 30 cap.
On October 1 most gear and token prices rose about 50%, and the Honor cap rose to 25,000. Rewards and vendors lists every price and rank reward. Since October 8 the Cooldown Manager can track your trinket; Blizzard says more consumable support will follow in a later patch.
PvP consumables checklist
Carry the best rank your level allows. The table shows what you can use at the beta's level 30 cap and what to stock at 60. Values are from Wowhead's Forever database; every potion has a 2-minute cooldown.
| Item | At level 30 (beta) | At level 60 |
|---|---|---|
| Healing potionFirst Aid | Greater Healing Potion (level 21): 455–585 health | Major Healing Potion (level 45): 1,050–1,750 health |
| Mana potionAlchemy | Mana Potion (level 22): 455–585 Mana | Major Mana Potion (level 49): 1,350–2,250 Mana |
| Free Action PotionAlchemy | Needs level 20. Immune to stuns and movement-impairing effects for 30 seconds | Same potion |
| Swiftness PotionAlchemy | Needs level 5. Run 50% faster for 15 seconds | Same potion |
| Rage potionWarrior, Druid · Alchemy | Great Rage Potion (level 25): 30–60 Rage | Mighty Rage Potion (level 46): 45–75 Rage and 60 Strength for 20 seconds |
| Thistle TeaRogue, Druid · Cooking | Needs level 5. 100 Energy at once; 5-minute cooldown | Same drink |
| Discolored healing potionAlchemy | Greater Discolored Healing Potion (level 21): 975–1,105 health, then 75% of it back as damage | Major Discolored Healing Potion (level 60): 2,625–2,975 health, same drawback |
| BandageFirst Aid | Mageweave Bandage (150 First Aid): 800 health over 8 seconds | Heavy Runecloth Bandage (225 First Aid): 2,000 health over 8 seconds |
| Anti-venomFirst Aid | Strong Anti-Venom: cures poisons up to level 35 | Powerful Anti-Venom: poisons up to level 65; needs 300 First Aid to use |
Scrolls now trigger the global cooldown (October 15), so use them before an urgent combat action. Draught of Predatory Senses now uses the Combat Potion cooldown and has a shorter duration; it competes with other potions on that cooldown.
Discolored potions and Druid forms
A Discolored Healing Potion heals about twice as much as the healing potion of the same rank, then you take 75% of that back as a 6-second poison or a 12-second disease. Since October 8 that damage no longer breaks crowd control. Use one to survive a burst until help arrives, not as your main heal.
Druids can drink potions, Rage potions and Thistle Tea without leaving their form, including Mana Potions in Bear, Dire Bear and Cat Form since an October 8 fix. The Druid guide covers the other form rules.
First Aid: bandages and remedies
In Forever, healing potions are made with First Aid instead of Alchemy. You do not need First Aid to drink them, just the potion's required level.
- Bandages: channeled, so moving or taking damage can interrupt them. The target cannot be bandaged again for 1 minute (Recently Bandaged), even after an interruption. Bandage when nobody is attacking you.
- Skill, not level: using a bandage needs First Aid skill, not a character level. Heavy Runecloth Bandage takes 225 to use but 290 to make.
- In combat: anti-venoms work in combat. Poultices (diseases) and tourniquets (bleeds) only work out of combat, so use them between fights. All remedies share a 1-minute cooldown.
- Remedy level: each rank removes effects only up to a set level. The limit applies to the effect, not to you, so stock ranks that match your enemies' level. The trainer ranks are starter versions: Anti-Venom and Simple Poultice stop at level 25, Woolen Tourniquet at 30. Powerful Anti-Venom, Powerful Poultice and Surgical Tourniquet reach 65.
Bombs and Engineering devices
Forever adds SAF-T and EZ-Thro bombs for non-Engineers. Their tooltips list no Engineering requirement, while the Rough Copper Bomb, Iron Grenade and Thorium Grenade need Engineering 30, 175 and 260. Blizzard also names SAF-T and EZ-Thro as the bombs Druids can throw in forms.
| Bomb | Crafter needs | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| SAF-T Copper Bomb | Engineering 55 | 22–28 Fire damage and a 1-second stun within 3 yards |
| EZ-Thro Copper Bomb XL | Engineering 130 | 43–57 Fire damage and a 1-second stun within 5 yards |
| EZ-Thro Thorium Grenade | Engineering 285 | 300–500 Fire damage and a 3-second stun within 3 yards |
Each has a 1-minute cooldown, and any damage breaks the stun, so throw it at a target your team is not hitting, such as a healer. From level 55, SAF-T Nitro Boosts is a bind-on-equip belt with no Engineering requirement: up to 160% movement speed for up to 8 seconds, 3 charges.
Engineers get more tools. The Iron Grenade (Engineering 175) stuns for 3 seconds. The Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector (210) nets a target for 10 seconds on a 10-minute cooldown but can catch you instead. The Goblin Sapper Charge (205) deals 450–750 Fire damage to nearby enemies and 375–625 to you. A Gnome's Engineering Specialization makes devices more reliable.
Weapon enchants and oils
Recovery and Revelation are melee weapon enchants, so Revelation suits casters with a staff or dagger.
| Enchant | Effect |
|---|---|
| RecoveryEnchanting 140 | Heals you for 5% of your maximum health when your attack is dodged or parried, at most once every 10 seconds. The recipe's flavor text calls it a chance, so do not count on every dodge. |
| RevelationEnchanting 140 | When a direct (non-periodic) spell fails to crit, it can give your next direct spell 100% more critical strike chance. It triggers less often as your crit chance rises. |
| Minor Wizard OilStarter version, level 5 | Up to 8 more spell damage and healing for 30 minutes. On September 24 Blizzard set Minor, Lesser and regular Wizard Oil to 8, 16 and 24 spell power. |
On October 8 Blizzard fixed Recovery for shapeshifted Druids, and Revelation's buff now survives a shift into a Druid form or Ghost Wolf.
Camp buffs
Sit or craft at a campfire for at least 1 minute to gain the profession objects’ buffs (Blizzard, October 21). Each player can add one object, the objects share a one-hour cooldown, and a camp buff does not stack with the matching class buff. Professions compares the camp objects.
Legacy perks for PvP
Legacy points are shared by all your non-Hardcore characters. Each character spends them separately, up to 16 points at launch. Most players earn their first point when a character reaches level 25.
PvP gives 12 of these points: ranks 3, 7, 10, 13 and 14, Exalted with each of the 4 battleground reputations, and the Journey quests for weeks 4, 7 and 10.
| Perk | What it does |
|---|---|
| For Great Honor | More Honor from PvP. Blizzard gives no percentage. |
| Talented | Talent points arrive up to 5 levels early, so you have a few more than 21 at the beta's level 30 cap. |
| Reagent Economy | Class abilities no longer need reagents bought from vendors. This does not remove a Warlock’s Soul Shard cost for Summon Incubus; Blizzard corrected that exception on October 15. |
| Permanence | Party, raid and camping buffs last longer. |
| High Alert | Better stealth detection, but not in battlegrounds. It helps against Rogues and Druids in world PvP. |
| Field Medicine | Shortens Recently Bandaged (by up to 10 seconds, Icy Veins says), but not in battlegrounds, dungeons or raids. |
The October 15 notes fix Bartering incorrectly discounting training and repairs. They also say The Quick and the Dead should affect more Priest spells, without listing them; check the spell you intend to use. Master Chef and Luremaster moved visually, with their five-point requirement unchanged.
Our starting picks for a PvP character are For Great Honor, plus Talented while you level to 60; add High Alert if you fight in the open world. Change perks at a class trainer, as with talents. Beta accounts received 16 points for testing on October 8. Beta re-specs cost from 1 silver, and the price steps down each hour.
