WoW Forever PvP Combat Mechanics

How crowd control, escapes, interrupts, Rage and crits work in WoW Forever PvP. The biggest beta changes: full-strength PvP crits, Rage from hits that ignores armor and absorbs, and fewer procs from low-rank spells.

What Blizzard changed for PvP in Forever

  • PvP critical strikes: since October 8, PvP crits are no longer weakened. Fixes on September 24 and October 1 let many periodic spells crit, including Renew, Rejuvenation, Riptide, Devouring Plague and Hellfire.
  • Effects that no longer break crowd control: Dark Sacrifice (Undead Priest) and Touch of the Grave (Undead racial) since September 24, and damage from Discolored Healing Potions since October 8.
  • Fewer random stuns: Improved Revenge (Warrior) now adds damage instead of a stun chance, and Rogue maces (Hack and Slash) ignore some armor instead of stunning.
  • Entrapment and traps: Entrapment (Survival Hunter) now always roots targets your trap catches; more points add duration. Since October 8 it has diminishing returns and triggers only on Frost Trap's first activation, not every pulse. Traps work in combat on a 30-second cooldown. October 15 notes allow one active Fire Trap and one active Ice Trap together.

Low-rank spells and proc talents

Spells cast far below your level get less from spell damage and healing, and trigger talents less often. Blizzard's October 1 example: a rank 1 Frostbolt at level 60 cannot trigger Frostbite. Blizzard also names Omen of Clarity, Arcane Concentration, Impact, Elemental Focus and Improved Wing Clip, and expects the same for any talent with a free effect. The rank gap is not published.

For a short-cast slow, Blizzard added Frost Blast at level 24 on October 15: a 1.5-second cast with a 40% slow, affected by Frostbolt talents. It is intended to replace the old rank 1 Frostbolt utility; it costs more Mana and deals more damage than that old rank.

Rage for Warriors and Druids

  • Getting hit: Rage ignores your armor and absorbs, so Power Word: Shield no longer costs you Rage. Since October 8, Stamina no longer lowers it, and crits and crushing blows you take count correctly. Blizzard expects most Warriors and Druids to gain more.
  • Dealing damage: Rage depends on your weapon's speed. Critical strikes with basic attacks give 100% more Rage: for Warriors since October 1 and Druids since October 8 (75% before).

Escapes, immunity and the PvP trinket

Removal ends an effect already on you; immunity blocks new ones. Values are from Wowhead's Forever data except the dated Blizzard updates; the race guide covers every racial.

ToolCooldownEffect
Greater Insignia (PvP trinket, Rank 2)5 minRemoves all roots, snares and loss-of-control effects.
Will to Survive (Human)3 minRemoves all stuns.
Will of the Forsaken (Undead)2 minRemoves Charm, Fear and Sleep. Unavailable during Scatter Shot (October 15 update).
Escape Artist (Gnome)2 minRemoves roots and snares, then blocks them for 3 sec.
Stoneform (Dwarf)3 minRemoves Bleeds, Poisons and Diseases, then blocks them and cuts Physical damage taken by 10% for 8 sec.
Shatter Curse (Orc)3 minRemoves Curses and Banes; no longer grants immunity. Magic damage taken reduced by 5% (October 15 update).
Tremor Totem (Shaman)NoneRemoves Fear, Charm and Sleep from party members within 30 yards.
Berserker Rage (Warrior)30 secBlocks Fear and Incapacitate effects on you for 10 sec.
Fear Ward (any Priest)3 minBlocks the next Fear on one ally; lasts 3 min.
Blessing of Freedom (Paladin)20 secBlocks roots and snares on one ally for 10 sec.
Voice of Truth (Holy Paladin talent)3 minBlocks Silence and interrupts for 6 sec.
Divine Shield (Paladin), Ice Block (Mage talent)5 minBlocks all attacks and spells for 10 sec.

Some racials and talents shorten controls instead. Orc Hardiness cuts stuns by 20%. Iron Will (Protection Warrior) shortens stuns, Silent Resolve (Discipline Priest) shortens stuns, fears and silences, and Surefooted (Survival Hunter) shortens snares and roots.

Since October 1, Druid forms are immune to Disarm, but shifting keeps an existing Disarm and its damage penalty, so disarm Druids before they shift.

Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Banes, one per Warlock on a target. Blizzard says anything that works on Curses works on Banes, and Wowhead's Remove Curse and Remove Lesser Curse tooltips list both.

Interrupts, Silence and spell pushback

One point in Improved Counterspell (Arcane Mage) now always adds a shorter Silence instead of a 50% chance of one (Blizzard, October 7).

Blizzard's class summaries say Hunters cannot stun or interrupt, Druids cannot snare, Silence or interrupt, and Paladins have no interrupt and few slows. Wowhead's Forever data still lists two exceptions: Intimidation, a Hunter pet stun, and Bear Form Feral Charge, an interrupt (see the Druid guide). Tauren Hunters and Druids also have War Stomp.

October 15 notes require Hunters to stand still for 0.5 seconds before Auto Shot, and wand users before shooting. They also remove spell pushback from Slam. Allow for that pause when moving between ranged attacks.

Talents that resist spell pushback

TalentSpells it protects
Twilight FocusHoly Priest, 3 pointsEvery spell you cast, including Starshards since a September 24 fix.

Team-fight priorities

  • Against healersSave your interrupt for a long heal on your kill target. Counterspell locks a school for 10 seconds, twice as long as Kick.
  • Protecting your healerClear melee off your healer with Psychic Scream, Intimidating Shout, Frost Nova, War Stomp or Confounding Flash. Blessing of Freedom keeps an ally free of roots and snares.
  • Against UndeadWill of the Forsaken removes Fear but gives no immunity, so a second Fear can follow at once.
  • Against Humans and OrcsHumans remove all stuns every 3 minutes, and stuns on Orcs last 20% less. Open on a Human with a short stun and save your longest for after Will to Survive.
