Priest talents for PvP

Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. At the beta's level 30 cap you have 21 points, or a few more with the Legacy perk Talented. That is enough for Penance, Discipline's 21-point talent, if every point goes into Discipline. Dual Specialization opens at level 40. Talent effects are from Blizzard's September 30 class preview; percentages are from Wowhead's datamined Forever data checked October 12.

Discipline: shields, Penance and Mana

TalentWhat it does
Twin DisciplinesRow 1New. Up to 5% more damage and healing from your instant spells, such as Renew.
Power in LightRow 1New. Smite and Penance deal up to 15% more damage to targets with your Holy Fire or Shadow Word: Pain (expanded October 15).
Silent ResolveStun, Fear and Silence effects on you last up to 15% less. Unbreakable Will was merged into it.
Mental StrengthRow 2October 15: increases Intellect by 2/4/6/8/10%; Improved Power Word: Shield moves to row 3.
Mental AgilityRow 3Three points, moved up from row 4. Smite, Holy Fire and your instant spells cost up to 10% less Mana.
Inner Focus3-minute cooldown. Your next spell costs no Mana and gets 25% more critical strike chance if it is not periodic.
Soul Warding16-point talentRemoves Power Word: Shield's 4-second cooldown and cuts its Mana cost by 15%. Requires Improved Power Word: Shield.
Renewed HopeFlash Heal, Binding Heal, Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater Heal and Penance get 10% more critical strike chance on targets with Weakened Soul, and each cuts Weakened Soul by 5 seconds. Requires Soul Warding.
Penance21-point talentA 2-second channel on a 12-second cooldown that damages an enemy or heals an ally every second. Wowhead lists it at level 30.
Divine AegisYour non-periodic critical heals also give the target a shield worth 15% of the heal for 12 seconds. It does not stack.

Holy Precision adds up to 18% hit chance with Holy spells, because Blizzard does not expect healing Priests to wear hit gear. Improved Mana Burn cuts up to 1 second from Mana Burn's cast, and Meditation gives much more Mana from Spirit.

Holy: Binding Heal and cast protection

TalentWhat it does
Twilight FocusThree points, formerly Healing Focus. Pushback protection on every spell you cast; Wowhead lists a 70% chance to avoid interruption from damage.
Blessed RecoveryNow also triggers when one attack takes more than 30% of your maximum health, healing part of that damage back over 6 seconds.
InspirationNow triggers from any non-periodic critical heal and raises the target's Armor for 15 seconds.
Binding Heal16-point talentHeals you and your target: 1.5-second cast, no cooldown. Blizzard tuned it to match Flash Heal even when you need no healing. Rank 1 (level 25) heals each of you for 236–284 for 155 Mana, like Flash Heal rank 2.
Litany of LightWhen a heal is a different spell from your previous heal, you get back 20% of its base Mana cost.
Prayer of Mending31-point talentHeals the target when it next takes damage, then jumps to a party member within 20 yards, up to 5 heals. Out of reach at level 30.

Spiritual Healing now needs only 3 points. Improved Prayer of Healing and Lightwell were removed.

Shadow: Silence, Vampiric Embrace and Shadowform

TalentWhat it does
Shadow FocusRow 1Moved up from row 2. Now raises the hit chance of your Shadow spells.
Shadow ReachRow 2Moved up from row 4 and needs only 2 points. Up to 20% more range on offensive Shadow spells.
Improved Psychic ScreamCuts Psychic Scream's cooldown by up to 4 seconds. Now requires Blackout, which gives Shadow damage spells up to a 10% chance to stun for 3 seconds.
SilenceNo longer requires Improved Psychic Scream. Silences the target for 5 seconds on a 45-second cooldown, from 20 yards.
Vampiric Embrace16-point talentNow in row 3. Lasts 30 seconds on a 30-second cooldown, cannot be resisted since October 15, and your party heals for 20% of your Shadow spell damage.
Devouring ContagionRow 5New. Cheaper Devouring Plague. If the target dies with it, the Plague spreads to two enemies (October 15 update) within 5 yards with its remaining duration.
Dark InspirationRow 4New October 15. Mind Blast and a completed Mind Flay channel raise your and your party's Spirit by 3/6/9/12/15% for 10 seconds.
Improved Mind FlayEach damage tick deals 10/20% more damage than the preceding tick. Improved Mind Blast moved to row 2; Improved Fade and Shadow Infinity were removed.
Early DemiseRow 6New. More critical strike chance for Shadow Word: Death on targets below 20% health.
ShadowformYou can cast every non-healing spell in it. Shadow spells cost 50% less Mana and their critical strike damage bonus rises by 100%. Wowhead adds 10% more Shadow damage (Blizzard says this bonus was lowered) and 15% less Physical damage taken.

Shadow Weaving now helps only you, with a smaller bonus. Improved Vampiric Embrace was removed.

Which tree to play

  • Discipline is our starting pick for battleground healing. Shields need no cast time, Soul Warding removes their cooldown, Silent Resolve shortens stuns and fears, and Penance arrives at level 30.
  • Holy suits Priests who get attacked while casting. Twilight Focus protects every cast from pushback, and Binding Heal heals you as well as your target.
  • Shadow is the damage tree, with Silence, Vampiric Embrace and damage over time. Blizzard says it brings less utility than a Warlock, and Shadowform may be out of reach at level 30.
  • Once Dual Specialization opens at level 40, keep one healing set and one Shadow set.

Key Priest abilities

Unless an October 15 amendment is noted, values are the first rank from Wowhead's Forever database, datamined beta game data checked October 12; higher ranks heal and hit harder.

AbilityLevelCooldownUse it to
Power Word: Shield64 secAbsorb damage on an ally for 30 seconds. While it holds, damage does not interrupt their casting. Rank 5 at level 30 absorbs 303.
Flash Heal20NoneHeal quickly: 1.5-second cast for 184–223 at rank 1.
Renew8NoneHeal over 15 seconds with an instant cast. Renews from several Priests now stack on one target.
Psychic Scream1430 secMake 2 enemies within 8 yards flee for 8 seconds; 3 enemies from rank 2 at level 28. Damage may break it.
Fear Ward203 minMake the next Fear on an ally fail. Lasts 3 minutes. Every Priest now learns it.
Dispel Magic18NoneRemove 1 harmful spell from an ally or 1 beneficial spell from an enemy.
Devouring Plague2024 secOctober 15 cooldown. Deal Shadow damage over 24 seconds that heals you. Every Priest now learns it, and it can crit since October 1.
Mind Blast108 secHit hard with Shadow damage; 1.5-second cast.
Mana Burn24NoneDrain a healer's Mana; they take 0.5 damage per point burned. 3-second cast.
Mind Control30NoneTake control of an enemy Humanoid for up to 1 minute. 3-second cast, 20 yards.
Shadow Word: Death3218 secOctober 15 cooldown. Finish a low target with instant Shadow damage. If it survives, you take 10% of your maximum health. New in Forever; above the beta cap.

Divine Spirit is now a baseline buff at level 30, and Prayer of Healing heals your target's party and their pets instead of your own. Blizzard's October 1 notes explain that ranks far below your level get less benefit from Spell Healing and Spell Damage, and trigger talents less often.

Shields and Weakened Soul

  • Weakened Soul: a shielded player cannot be shielded again for 15 seconds, although the shield lasts 30. Once Weakened Soul is gone, you can refresh a worn shield. October 15 clarifies that a weaker replacement cannot overwrite a stronger shield already on the target.
  • Shielding again sooner: Renewed Hope cuts Weakened Soul by 5 seconds with each heal it lists. A Human Priest's Divine Grace removes it, so you can shield that ally again once the 4-second cooldown is ready.
  • Shielding a Warrior or Druid: Rage from damage taken now ignores absorbs, so your shield no longer costs them Rage (a bug in this was fixed October 8).

Best racials for a Priest

Six races can be Priests. Each keeps its base racials and gets two Priest-only spells. The race guide compares every racial.

Our starting picks: Human or Gnome for Alliance healers, or Night Elf if melee players keep reaching you. On the Horde, Undead answers Warlock and Priest fears, and Troll's Hex of Weakness cuts the healing on your kill target.

Priest racial spells

Levels and cooldowns are Blizzard's where it gave them, otherwise the first rank from Wowhead's datamined Forever data checked October 12.

SpellRaceLevelCooldownUse it to
Desperate PrayerDwarf1010 minSave yourself when focused: an instant self-heal for 146–181 at rank 1. Unchanged.
ChastiseDwarf202 minRoot a Humanoid attacker for 2 seconds so you can step away. Instant, 20 yards.
Confounding FlashGnome102 minPeel attackers off you: up to 5 enemies within 8 yards are confused for 3 seconds. 0.5-second cast; damage breaks it.
Contingency PlanGnome205 minPrepare a flag carrier or partner: a 30-second ward that gives an absorb shield and a heal over time if they drop below 35% health. Instant.
Divine GraceHuman105 minHeal an ally below 50% health instantly and remove their Weakened Soul. You cannot cast it on yourself.

Base racials that help a Priest

Unchanged cooldowns are datamined Wowhead values checked October 12; the October 15 Blizzard update supplies the amendments below.

RaceRacialWhy it helps
HumanWill to Survive, Perception (3 min each)Will to Survive removes all stuns on you. Perception reveals stealthed enemies for 20 seconds. Ruthless adds 2% critical strike chance.
DwarfStoneform (3 min)Removes and blocks bleeds, poisons and diseases, and cuts physical damage by 10% for 8 seconds. Earth Fury adds 2% critical damage and healing.
GnomeEscape Artist, Eureka! (2 min each)Escape Artist breaks roots and snares and blocks them for 3 seconds. Eureka! now lasts 8 seconds with no charges: eligible heals and damage spells are 10% cheaper and stronger. October 15 explicitly adds Power Word: Shield; periodic effects remain excluded.
Night ElfElune's Light (3 min), Shadowmeld10% more critical strike chance for 15 seconds, which feeds Divine Aegis and Inspiration. Shadowmeld hides you while you stand still.
TrollBerserking (3 min)10% faster casting for 10 seconds.
UndeadWill of the Forsaken, Cannibalize (2 min each)Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep, with no immunity afterwards. Cannibalize restores 35% of your health and Mana over 10 seconds from a corpse. Since October 15, Will of the Forsaken is unavailable during Scatter Shot.

Fight tips

  • Against melee attackersShield yourself first so their damage cannot interrupt your heals. Use Psychic Scream when two of them are on you. Dwarves can root one with Chastise, Gnomes can confuse them with Confounding Flash, and Night Elves can make them miss with Elune's Grace.
  • Against RoguesPerception (Human) spots them in stealth. Silent Resolve shortens their stuns, Will to Survive removes them, and Stoneform clears their poisons.
  • Against FearPut Fear Ward on yourself or your flag carrier before the fight. Will of the Forsaken breaks one Fear but gives no immunity to the next.
  • Against healersMana Burn drains their Mana, and Improved Mana Burn can cut its cast to 2 seconds. Dispel Magic strips a buff. Shadow Priests can Silence the heal that matters.
  • Protecting a flag carrierShield and Renew the carrier before the enemy arrives. Gnomes can add Contingency Plan, which stacks with both.

Recent Priest changes

  • Power Word: Shield can always overwrite a shield on a target without Weakened Soul. Renew and Contingency Plan can crit. Starshards gains pushback resistance from Twilight Focus. Dark Sacrifice no longer breaks crowd control that breaks on damage. Eureka! became a 10% cost discount.
  • Class preview: Fear Ward and Devouring Plague for every Priest at 20, Divine Spirit at 30 and Shadow Word: Death at 32. Reworked racial spells, with new ones for Gnomes. Prayer of Healing heals your target's party, Renews from several Priests stack, and Fade's threat reduction doubled. New talents include Penance, Binding Heal and Soul Warding.
  • Level cap raised to 30. Devouring Plague can crit, and Inner Focus's crit bonus no longer applies to periodic effects. Early Demise now needs a target below 20% health, as intended. Shadow Weaving can no longer fail to apply. Eureka! no longer helps periodic effects.
  • Penance's damage and healing were cut because it acted like a 3-second channel. Its Mana costs were adjusted so it stays more efficient than Heal and Greater Heal (rank 1 costs 50% more), and ranks 2 and 4 heal more. Smite, Lesser Heal and Heal ranks now always improve on the rank before, and PvP critical strikes are no longer weakened.
