WoW Forever Shaman PvP Guide
Shamans support a group with totems, heals and interrupts. In WoW Forever, buff totems last 5 minutes and can be recalled or moved, Stormstrike drops to an 8-second cooldown, and Restoration gains Water Shield and Riptide.
- PvP roles
- Healer (Restoration), melee damage (Enhancement) or spell damage (Elemental Combat)
- Alliance races
- Dwarf only
- Horde races
- Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne
- Strengths
- Totems that buff, heal and solve problems for the party; Mail armor and a shield make Shamans one of the sturdiest classes
- Weakness
- No effective crowd control, so you rely on teammates for control and protection
Shaman talents for PvP
Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. At the beta's level 30 cap you have 21 points, or a few more with the Legacy perk Talented: enough for a tree's 21-point talent, not its 31-point capstone. Dual Specialization opens at level 40. Talent effects below are from Blizzard's October 7 class preview and the beta notes.
Elemental Combat: faster casts and a root
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Elemental AlacrityRow 2 | Moved to row 2 on October 15. At 3 points, Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning cast 0.5 seconds faster, and Lava Burst casts faster too. Lightning Overload now requires it. |
| Eye of the Storm | Gives resistance to spell pushback from damage while you cast Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Lava Burst. It no longer waits for a critical hit on you. |
| Call of Thunder | Removed October 15. Earthbound is now the 16-point milestone; Lava Burst is the 21-point milestone. |
| Elemental Reach | Flame Shock reaches up to 15 yards farther; Fire Nova and Lava Burst up to 6 yards farther. Since October 15 it also cuts Totemic Projection's cooldown by 10/20 seconds. |
| Lightning OverloadRow 5 | Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning can cast a free second copy for half damage and no threat. |
| Earthbound16-point talent | Earthbind Totem roots nearby enemies for 5 seconds when placed. Moved to the 16-point milestone on October 15. |
| Lava Burst21-point talent | 2.5-second cast, 10-second cooldown, 30 yards. Fire damage, 20% more with your Flame Shock. Moved to the 21-point milestone on October 15 and no longer has a prerequisite. |
Lightning Bolt (rank 4 and up) now casts in 2.5 seconds and Chain Lightning in 2 seconds, with lower spell power ratios to match. October 15 changed the prerequisites to Elemental Alacrity → Lightning Overload → Elemental Fury. Elemental Mastery returns as the 31-point talent, requiring Lava Burst: for 15 seconds it cuts Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst casts by 0.5 seconds and removes Chain Lightning's cooldown, on a 3-minute cooldown.
Enhancement: Stormstrike and instant Ghost Wolf
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Thundering StrikesRow 1 | Critical strike chance for all spells and attacks, not only weapon attacks. |
| Mental DexterityRow 2 | Adds Attack Power equal to a percentage of your Intellect. Flurry requires it. |
| Improved Ghost Wolf | Rank 1 lets you use Ghost Wolf indoors and cuts its cast by 1 second. Rank 2 makes it instant. |
| Shamanistic Focus11-point talent | Shocks and Lightning Shield cost much less Mana. |
| Flurry | 5% attack speed per point, up to 25% (was 30%). |
| Stormstrike16-point talent | Cooldown cut from 20 to 8 seconds. Now costs 8% of base Mana. Strikes with your weapon, and your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock on the target deals 20% more damage. |
| Maelstrom WeaponRow 6 | Melee attacks can stack charges that shorten Lightning Bolt's cast. With enough ranks and charges it becomes instant. |
| Rage of the Farseer31-point talent | 30% attack speed for 25 seconds on a 3-minute cooldown. It no longer speeds up spells. |
Improved Stormstrike (row 5) can reset Stormstrike when you dodge or parry. Anticipation now gives twice as much dodge chance as before, and Toughness now adds Stamina instead of armor. Two-Handed Axes and Maces, Weapon Mastery, Enhancing Totems and Improved Weapon Totems are now baseline.
Restoration: Water Shield, Mana Tide and Riptide
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Totemic FocusRow 2 | Cheaper totems, and now also cheaper Totemic Projection and Call spells. |
| Tidal FocusRow 1 | Moved to row 1 October 15. Now also adds hit chance to all spells and attacks. |
| Improved Reincarnation | Now also raises your maximum health by a percentage. |
| Water Shield11-point talent | Three water globes. Each time an attack or spell hits you, or any of your spells critically hits or heals (expanded October 15), a globe restores 2% of your maximum Mana. No cooldown; lasts 10 minutes. |
| Restorative Totems | Its bonus to Healing Stream Totem is doubled. |
| Mana Tide Totem16-point talent | Moved up from the 31-point slot. For 12 seconds it restores Mana to group members within 30 yards every 3 seconds; 5-minute cooldown. October 15 adds a rank learned at level 38. |
| Healing Way | Redesigned to make Healing Wave heal a percentage more. Riptide requires it. |
| Riptide31-point talent | Instant heal plus more healing over 15 seconds, 6-second cooldown. Your Chain Heal is 25% stronger on that target. |
Only one shield can be active at a time, so Water Shield replaces Lightning Shield. Wowhead's data shows at most one globe every 3.5 seconds. Healing Focus needs only 3 points. The new row 2 talent Mindfulness is placed so Elemental Shamans can reach it.
Which tree to play
- Restoration is our starting pick for battlegrounds. Water Shield (11 points) and Mana Tide Totem (16) both fit in 21 points, and Mail plus a shield lets you keep healing under attack.
- Enhancement is the melee pick. Stormstrike every 8 seconds sets up a harder Earth Shock, and two points in Improved Ghost Wolf make Ghost Wolf instant and usable indoors.
- Elemental is the control pick: Earthbound now arrives at 16 points, leaving the 21-point milestone for Lava Burst. Check the revised tree before assigning points.
Blizzard's October 7 progression article gives Shamans healer, melee and caster PvP sets; the rewards and vendors guide covers their Honor costs and Emboldened Seals.
Key Shaman abilities
Unless an October 15 amendment is noted, values are the first rank from Wowhead's Forever database, datamined beta game data checked October 12; higher ranks hit harder and cost more. Shocks reach 20 yards.
| Ability | Level | Cooldown | Use it to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth Shock | 4 | 6 sec | Interrupt a cast and lock that spell school for 2 seconds. |
| Frost Shock | 20 | 6 sec | Slow the target by 50% for 8 seconds. |
| Flame Shock | 10 | 6 sec | Deal Fire damage over 12 seconds and set up Lava Burst. |
| Purge | 12 | None | Remove 1 magic effect from an enemy within 30 yards; rank 2 (level 32) removes 2. |
| Earthbind Totem | 6 | 15 sec | Slow enemies within 10 yards of the totem. It lasts 45 seconds and has only 5 health. |
| Grounding Totem | 30 | 15 sec | Pull one harmful spell aimed at a nearby party member onto the totem every 10 seconds, for 45 seconds. Area spells are not redirected. |
| Tremor Totem | 18 | None | Remove Fear, Charm and Sleep from party members within 30 yards for 5 minutes. |
| Ghost Wolf | 20 | None | Run 40% faster. Outdoors only, with a 3-second cast, until you take Improved Ghost Wolf. |
| Lesser Healing Wave | 20 | None | Heal a teammate taking burst damage: 1.5-second cast, 40 yards. |
| Chain Heal | 40 | None | Heal 3 targets with one 2.5-second cast; each jump heals 50% as much as the last. |
Rockbiter, Flametongue, Frostbrand and Windfury Weapon now last 60 minutes instead of 5, and they can be active alongside Sharpening Stones, Weight Stones or Wizard Oil.
How totems work in Forever
- Faster to place: totems trigger a 1-second global cooldown, down from 1.5.
- Longer buffs: totems with a lasting buff now last 5 minutes instead of 2. Short totems are unchanged.
- Tracking: a display shows your active totems and their time left. Right-click a totem there to dismiss it.
- Resistance totems now cover your whole raid group.
Totem tools
| Tool | Level | Cooldown | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Call of the Elements | 20 | None | Places your preset of four totems, one per element, after a 3-second cast. It costs the Mana of all four combined. |
| Totemic Recall | 20 | None | Destroys all your totems at once and returns 25% of their Mana cost (see the note below). |
| Totemic Projection | 22 | 1 min | Teleports all your totems to a spot within 30 yards. Costs 25% of base Mana. |
| Fire Nova | 12 | 10 sec | Damages enemies within 10 yards of your Fire totem. It replaces Fire Nova Totem. October 15 reduced its base damage, Mana cost and Spell Power scaling; do not reuse an older damage estimate. |
Call of the Spirits (level 30) and Call of the Ancestors (level 40) add a second and third preset.
Totems for PvP
Range and rank 1 values below are Wowhead beta game data checked October 12. October 15 makes Strength of Earth, Grace of Air, Windfury and Flametongue raid-wide; Windfury and Flametongue affect players only.
| Totem | Element | Level | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stoneskin Totem | Earth | 4 | Reduces Physical damage taken by 4. |
| Strength of Earth Totem | Earth | 10 | Adds 7 Strength. |
| Healing Stream Totem | Water | 20 | Heals group members every 2 seconds. |
| Poison Cleansing Totem | Water | 22 | Removes 1 poison every 5 seconds. |
| Mana Spring Totem | Water | 26 | Restores 4 Mana every 2 seconds. |
| Flametongue Totem | Fire | 28 | Main-hand hits deal extra Fire damage; slower weapons gain more per hit. Now a raid buff for players, not a weapon enchant. |
| Windfury Totem | Air | 32 | Each main-hand hit has a 20% chance of an extra attack with bonus Attack Power. Now a raid buff for players. |
| Grace of Air Totem | Air | 42 | Adds 49 Agility. |
Totem stacking rules
- Since October 15, Grace of Air stacks with Windfury or Flametongue. Tranquil Air remains removed.
- Flametongue Totem does not stack with Windfury Totem, or with itself when recast.
- With Windfury Weapon on, you get nothing from any Windfury Totem. With Flametongue Weapon on, you get nothing from Flametongue Totem.
In a melee group, choose Windfury or Flametongue, then add Grace of Air when it is available. Grace of Air no longer forces a choice between Agility and either attack buff.
Best racials for a Shaman
Unchanged cooldowns are datamined Wowhead values checked October 12; the October 15 Blizzard update supplies the amendments below. The race guide compares every racial.
| Race | Racial | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarf | Stoneform (3 min) | Removes and blocks bleeds, poisons and diseases, and cuts physical damage by 10% for 8 seconds. Earth Fury replaces Mace Specialization and adds 2% critical damage and healing. |
| Orc | Blood Fury (3 min), Shatter Curse (3 min) | Blood Fury adds 10% Attack Power and spell power for 15 seconds. Shatter Curse dispels Curses and Banes and cuts magic damage taken by 5% for 8 seconds; it no longer prevents new applications. Hardiness shortens stuns by 20%. Savage adds 1% critical strike chance. |
| Tauren | War Stomp (90 sec) | Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yards for 2 seconds after a 0.5-second cast. Endurance now adds 2% critical damage and healing. |
| Troll | Berserking (3 min) | 10% casting and attack speed for 10 seconds. Regeneration bonuses rise to 20% (October 15). |
| Windshaper | Skysight (2 min) | 10% movement speed for 30 seconds, or 15 minutes near an elemental convergence. Wind Blessed adds 3% melee, ranged and spell haste. Skysight can now be cast while moving. |
Tauren is our pick for Horde healers: Shamans lack crowd control, and War Stomp's area stun buys time to cast. Orc suits Enhancement for Blood Fury and shorter stuns.
Fight tips
- Against Warlocks and PriestsPlace Tremor Totem before the fight so Fear, Charm and Sleep break on your party. Grounding Totem soaks one single-target spell every 10 seconds.
- Against healersSave Earth Shock for a long heal; its school lockout lasts only 2 seconds. Purge their magic buffs between interrupts.
- Against meleeSlow them with Frost Shock or Earthbind Totem; with Earthbound the totem roots them for 5 seconds first. Then leave in Ghost Wolf, instant with 2 points in Improved Ghost Wolf.
- Against RoguesPoison Cleansing Totem removes a poison from nearby party members every 5 seconds. Dwarves can Stoneform poisons and bleeds, and stuns on Orcs last 20% less.
- When the fight movesTotemic Projection moves your whole set with one instant cast instead of a recast. Call of the Elements takes 3 seconds, so place your preset before the fight.
Recent Shaman changes
- Windfury, Grace of Air, Tranquil Air and Flametongue totems got the stacking limits listed above. Elemental Alacrity and Elemental Fury swapped rows. Rage of the Farseer lost its casting speed, and Riptide can crit.
- Blizzard listed Totemic Recall's Mana refund as fixed. Disease Cleansing Totem now lasts 5 minutes, Ghost Wolf is easier to see in bright areas, and the level cap rose to 30.
- Blizzard's class preview set out the totem, imbue, cast-time and talent changes on this page.
- Water Shield's tooltip no longer lists a 15-second cooldown; it never had one. Flametongue Totem uses a shapeshifted target's attack speed. Fire Nova no longer triggers and uses up Elemental Focus at once. Critical strikes in PvP no longer have reduced effect.
