WoW Forever Mage PvP Guide

Mages win fights by controlling them from range. In WoW Forever, Ice Block and Cold Snap become Frost's 16- and 21-point talents, Ice Lance and Arcane Blast are new talents, and low spell ranks trigger talents less often.

Mage talents for PvP

Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. At the beta's level 30 cap you have 21 points, or a few more with the Legacy perk Talented: enough for a tree's 21-point talent, not its 31-point capstone. Dual Specialization opens at level 40. Talent effects below are from Blizzard's October 7 class preview and the beta notes; figures Blizzard left out are from Wowhead's Forever database.

Frost: control and defense

TalentWhat it does
Ice Lance11-point talentNew. An instant, low-damage spell that deals 200% more to Frozen targets, including targets Fingers of Frost treats as Frozen.
Ice Block16-point talentImmune to all attacks and spells for 10 seconds, but you cannot move, attack or cast. 5-minute cooldown. Moved up from row 5 to row 4.
Cold Snap21-point talentFinishes the cooldown of your other Frost spells. Its own cooldown is now 10 minutes (was 5). Moved down from row 3 to row 5.
Fingers of FrostRow 5New. Your Chill effects have a chance to give you 1 charge (2 at rank 2). Each charge makes a spell treat the target as Frozen, so Ice Lance hits hard without Frost Nova.
Improved BlizzardIts slow now caps at 40% (was 65%).
Shatter and Winter's ChillShatter no longer needs Improved Frost Nova. October 15 redesigned Winter's Chill to build a bonus for your next Cone of Cold, replacing its critical strike bonus. Frostbolt, Frost Blast and Fingers of Frost empowered Ice Lance apply the stacks.

Fire: burst from critical strikes

TalentWhat it does
Improved Fire BlastRow 1Shortens Fire Blast's cooldown and increases its range by 8/15 yards. October 15 restored the Improved Fire Blast name and removed the bonus after killing a target.
IncinerationRow 1More critical strike chance for Fire Blast and Scorch, and now for Ice Lance and Arcane Blast. Formerly Incinerate.
Heating UpRow 4Requires Pyroblast. Each non-periodic critical strike from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast or Scorch cuts your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%. Three stacks make it a 1.5-second cast. Since October 15, every Fire Blast adds a charge (two on a critical strike), and Presence of Mind prevents Pyroblast from consuming Heating Up.
Critical MassOctober 15 expands this talent to five points for a total 10% critical strike chance bonus.
Fire PowerOctober 15 redesign: three points, adding 1/2/3% Fire damage for each of your Fire effects on the target, up to 12%. Frostfire Bolt benefits but does not add an effect toward the bonus.
Blast WaveDamages enemies around you and dazes them (50% slower) for 6 seconds; 45-second cooldown. No longer requires Pyroblast. Level 30.
ImpactFire spells can stun the target for 2 seconds. Low spell ranks trigger it less, and since October 8 Flamestrike's damage over time cannot trigger it.
IgniteEach Mage now has their own Ignite, and critical strikes landing close together no longer lose damage.
CombustionEach Fire hit adds 10% Fire critical strike chance until you land 3 non-periodic Fire critical strikes (4 before October 1). 3-minute cooldown; level 40.

Arcane: Arcane Blast, Missiles and interrupts

TalentWhat it does
Arcane Blast11-point talentOctober 15 redesign: 1.5-second cast. Each stack adds Spell Damage equal to 15% of your Intellect and raises Arcane Blast's Mana cost, up to four stacks. The buff lasts 15 seconds from its first application and survives other spell casts. Base damage and Spell Damage scaling were reduced 40%.
Missile BarrageRow 1Now a two-point row 1 talent. It makes Arcane Missiles faster and free; Arcane Missiles hits can now trigger it too. Earlier proc percentages do not establish both current ranks.
Arcane Wrath16-point talentNew October 15: 3.5-second cast, 6-second cooldown. Its damage gains an additional Spell Power contribution equal to 5% of your maximum Mana.
Improved ChannelingNow also protects Arcane Blast from being interrupted by damage. Formerly Improved Arcane Missiles.
Improved CounterspellOne point now always adds a shorter Silence to Counterspell, instead of a 50% chance of a Silence.
Presence of MindYour next Mage spell with a cast under 10 seconds becomes instant. 3-minute cooldown.
Arcane PowerYour spells deal 30% more damage and cost 30% more Mana for 15 seconds. 3-minute cooldown. Now requires Presence of Mind.

Which tree to play

  • Frost is our starting pick for battlegrounds at level 30. The announced milestones are Ice Lance, Ice Block and Cold Snap; check their prerequisites before allocating all 21 points: freeze with Frost Nova, follow with instant Ice Lances, and Ice Block when melee catches you.
  • Fire trades safety for burst. Critical strikes speed up your next Pyroblast, and since October 8 PvP critical strikes no longer have reduced effect. Combustion waits until level 40.
  • Arcane suits fights around healers: Improved Counterspell adds a Silence, and Presence of Mind can make a Polymorph instant.
  • Frost and Fire hybrids open at level 40 with Frostfire Bolt. Blizzard's example pairs Ignite with Ice Shards so Frostfire Bolt critical strikes deal 280% damage in total.

Key Mage abilities

Unless an October 15 amendment is noted, values are the first rank from Wowhead's Forever database, datamined beta game data checked October 12; higher ranks hit harder and some last longer.

AbilityLevelCooldownUse it to
Polymorph8NoneTake one enemy out of the fight for up to 20 seconds (30 at rank 2, level 20). 1.5-second cast; any damage breaks it. One target at a time.
Frost Blast24Not statedApply a 40% slow with a 1.5-second cast. Added October 15 as an alternative to downranked Frostbolt; benefits from Frostbolt talents.
Frost Nova1025 secFreeze every enemy near you for up to 8 seconds, then walk out of melee range. Damage may break it early.
Blink2015 secTeleport 20 yards forward and break free of stuns and roots.
Counterspell2430 secInterrupt a cast and lock that spell school for 10 seconds.
Frostbolt4NoneSlow the target by 40%: 5 seconds at rank 1, 7 seconds at rank 4 (level 20). See spell ranks before you use rank 1.
Cone of Cold2610 secHit and slow everything in front of you by 40% for 6 seconds. Since October 15, the first four targets receive an additional 10% slow lasting 3 seconds longer.
Fire Blast68 secFinish a fleeing target with instant Fire damage at 20 yards.
Arcane Missiles8NoneChannel missiles for 3 seconds (5 from rank 3, level 24). Line of sight is checked only at the start, so a target that steps behind cover still takes the missiles.
Mana Shield20NoneAbsorb physical damage with Mana instead of health: 120 damage at rank 1, costing 2 Mana per point absorbed.
Remove Lesser Curse18NoneRemove one Curse or Bane from yourself or a friend. Banes are the Warlock's damaging effects, such as Bane of Agony (formerly Curse of Agony).
Evocation208 minRefill Mana: channel for 8 seconds to regenerate Mana 1500% faster.
Frostfire Bolt40NoneNew in Forever. A 3-second cast that counts as Fire and Frost, slows by 40% and burns for 9 seconds. It uses your higher spell damage and the target's lower resistance.

Ice Barrier, a talent Wowhead lists at level 40 with a 30-second cooldown, absorbs damage and stops damage from interrupting your casts while it holds.

Comprehension scrolls: Comprehension, a new Mage-only minor tradeskill, lets you read scrolls that creatures drop (Comprehend Scroll, in the General tab of your spellbook). Since October 1 they cannot be cast while moving. Blizzard has not listed their effects.

How spell ranks and procs work in Forever

  • Low ranks lose power: spells at ranks far below your level get less from Spell Damage and trigger talents such as Arcane Concentration, Impact and Frostbite less often. Blizzard says to expect the same penalty on similar talents that trigger a free effect.
  • Frost Blast: from level 24, this October 15 addition supplies a 1.5-second, 40% slow with a higher Mana cost. Consider it before relying on downranked Frostbolt procs.
  • Rank 1 Frostbolt: it slows by 40% after a 1.5-second cast, but at level 60 it has a 0% chance to trigger Frostbite, the talent that lets Chill effects freeze the target. You choose between a quick slow and a freeze chance.
  • New ranks are upgrades: on October 8 Blizzard rebalanced ranks 1–5 of Frostbolt and Fireball and ranks 1–3 of Arcane Missiles, so every new rank is better than the last.

Best racials for a Mage

Stuns, Fear and melee that sticks to you are what kill Mages, so the escape racials matter most. Unchanged cooldowns are datamined Wowhead values checked October 12; the October 15 Blizzard update supplies the amendments below. The race guide compares every racial.

RaceRacialWhy it helps
GnomeEscape Artist (2 min), Eureka! (2 min)Escape Artist breaks roots and snares and blocks them for 3 seconds. Eureka! now lasts 8 seconds with no charges: damaging spells cost 10% less Mana and hit 10% harder. Arcane Missiles counts; periodic effects remain excluded.
HumanWill to Survive (3 min), Perception (3 min)Will to Survive removes all stuns on you, which is strong against Rogues. Perception helps you spot them before they open. Ruthless adds 2% critical strike chance.
UndeadWill of the Forsaken (2 min)Removes Charm, Fear and Sleep, with no immunity afterwards. Cannibalize now restores Mana as well as health. Since October 15, Will of the Forsaken is unavailable during Scatter Shot.
OrcShatter Curse (3 min), Blood Fury (3 min), HardinessShatter Curse dispels Curses and Banes and cuts magic damage taken by 5% for 8 seconds; it no longer prevents new applications. Blood Fury adds 10% Spell Power for 15 seconds, and Hardiness shortens stuns by 20%. Savage adds 1% critical strike chance.
TrollBerserking (3 min)10% faster casting for 10 seconds.
High Order SkyborneRead Ley Line (2 min)Doubles Health and Mana regeneration for at least 30 seconds, or 15 minutes at a ley line. Its 2-second cast now works while moving. Wind Blessed adds 3% spell haste.

Fight tips

  • Against Warriors and RoguesFrost Nova, then walk out of range before you cast. Blink breaks stuns and roots, so save it for a stun if you can. Use Ice Block when you cannot get away.
  • Against healersCounterspell a long heal to lock that school for 10 seconds. Polymorph a second healer or attacker and keep your own area spells off it.
  • Against WarlocksRemove Lesser Curse takes off one Curse or Bane. Orcs can dispel them with Shatter Curse, and Undead can break Fear with Will of the Forsaken.
  • Against runners and flag carriersSlow them with Frostbolt or Cone of Cold (40%), freeze them with Frost Nova, and finish with instant Fire Blast at 20 yards.
  • Protecting your healerStand near your healer so Frost Nova freezes their attackers too and your healer can walk away. Polymorph any attacker who follows. Fire Mages can add Blast Wave's daze.

Recent Mage changes

  • Arcane Missiles checks line of sight only when the channel starts. Hot Streak (now Heating Up) lasts 20 seconds (was 15) and Wake of Fire 30 seconds (was 20). Ignite no longer double-counts damage bonuses.
  • Hot Streak renamed Heating Up, and Combustion is back to 3 charges. Comprehension scrolls were rebalanced and cannot be cast while moving. Improved Scorch and Winter's Chill no longer roll a second time to be resisted. The character sheet now explains that low spell ranks lose Spell Damage and proc chance.
  • Class preview: Ice Block became the 16-point talent, and Cold Snap the 21-point talent with a 10-minute cooldown. Ice Lance, Fingers of Frost, Arcane Blast, Missile Barrage and Frostfire Bolt (level 40) were added, Cone of Cold was shortened and Improved Blizzard's slow capped at 40%.
  • Frostbolt, Fireball and Arcane Missiles low ranks rebalanced. Impact no longer triggers from Flamestrike's damage over time. PvP critical strikes no longer have reduced effect.
