WoW Forever Hunter PvP Guide
Hunters fight from the longest range of any class, with a pet at their side. In WoW Forever, traps work in combat, Aimed Shot is baseline at level 20, and every pet family has an ability of its own.
- PvP roles
- Ranged damage, with a pet that adds control or pressure
- Alliance races
- Dwarf, Human, Night Elf, High Order Skyborne
- Horde races
- Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne
- Strengths
- Longest range of any class, many Aspects and shots, traps usable in combat
- Weakness
- Ranged attacks do not work within 8 yards, traps go only where you stand, and Blizzard says Hunters cannot stun or interrupt
Hunter talents for PvP
Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. At the beta's level 30 cap you have 21 points, or a few more with the Legacy perk Talented: enough for a tree's 21-point talent, not its 31-point capstone. Dual Specialization opens at level 40. Talent effects below are from Blizzard's September 30 class preview and the later beta notes. Numbers marked Wowhead come from its Forever database.
Beast Mastery: pet pressure and the pet stun
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Endurance Training | Now gives your pet both Health and Armor, with Thick Hide merged into it. |
| Focused Fire | You and your pet deal more damage while your pet is active (Wowhead lists 2%). |
| Ferocity | A smaller pet critical strike bonus that now also covers Hawks. Blizzard's October 8 known issues listed a visual bug hiding its bonus on the character sheet. Current display behavior is unverified. |
| Summon Hawk16-point talent | Deals instant damage, then a Hawk attacks your target for 18 seconds, up to two at once. 35-yard range. Shares Arcane Shot's 6-second cooldown. |
| Intimidation | Requires Bestial Swiftness. Your pet's next hit stuns the target for 3 seconds on a 1-minute cooldown (Wowhead, level 30). That hit also gets 100% more critical strike chance. |
Unleashed Fury now also boosts Hawks. Blizzard's Beast Mastery notes say Aspect of the Monkey now gives twice as much Dodge, and your pet half the benefit. Wowhead puts this on the talent Improved Aspect of the Monkey (4% more Dodge).
Marksmanship: burst damage and range
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Lethal AttacksRow 1 | Formerly Lethal Shots. Now adds critical strike chance to all attacks. |
| EfficiencyRow 2 | A bigger Mana discount that now covers Stings and melee abilities as well as Shots. |
| Careful Aim | Adds melee and ranged Attack Power equal to 20–100% of your Intellect. Required for Mortal Shots. |
| Lone Wolf11-point talent | 20% more damage with all attacks while you have no active pet. |
| Trueshot Aura21-point talent | Moved up to row 4, with new lower-level ranks. October 15 expands it to the whole raid. |
| Barrage | A smaller damage bonus, but it now applies to Aimed Shot as well as Multi-Shot and Volley. |
| Sniper Shot31-point talent | Requires Trueshot Aura. A 4-second cast on a 15-second cooldown that hits harder than Aimed Shot from up to 45 yards. Your next 3 shots within 10 seconds gain 10 yards of range. Wowhead lists it at level 40. |
Survival: traps, roots and melee range
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| SurefootedRow 3 | Shortens slows and other movement-impairing effects on you. Its hit bonus now applies to all attacks. |
| Entrapment | Now always roots the enemies your trap catches; more points add duration instead of chance. Since October 8 it has diminishing returns, and with Frost Trap it fires only when the trap first triggers, not on every pulse. |
| Improved Wing Clip | Gives Wing Clip a chance to immobilize for 5 seconds (Wowhead). Three points reach the maximum 20%. Since October 8 the chance is lower with ranks far below your level. |
| Counterattack16-point talent | After you parry, strike for 50% weapon damage and immobilize the target for 5 seconds. 5-second cooldown (Wowhead). |
| Survivalist's Discipline | Shortens the cooldowns of your traps and Deterrence. |
| Expose Prey | Melee and ranged attacks on your Hunter's Mark target have a 10% chance (Wowhead) to enable Mongoose Bite for 10 seconds, as if you had dodged. |
| Strider Kick21-point talent | An instant kick for 100% weapon damage that gives you 30% movement speed for 3 seconds. 8-second cooldown (Wowhead). Since October 15 it works while disarmed or without a main-hand weapon. |
Lacerating Strikes, the 31-point talent, makes Mongoose Bite add a bleed over 21 seconds. Wyvern Sting is gone, merged with Killer Instinct and Improved Feign Death into Resourcefulness, which makes traps and melee abilities cheaper. October 15 limits its critical-strike activation to melee and ranged abilities; traps do not trigger it.
Which tree to play
- Survival is our starting pick for level 30 battlegrounds, because its talents answer the 8-yard dead zone. Entrapment roots enemies caught by your trap, Surefooted shortens slows on you, and Strider Kick gets you back to range.
- Beast Mastery suits players who want control and pressure from the pet: Intimidation's stun and Summon Hawk's Hawks.
- Marksmanship is the damage tree. Lone Wolf trades your pet, and its family ability, for 20% more damage, so take it when your team already brings control.
Key Hunter abilities
Unless an October 15 amendment is noted, values are the first rank from Wowhead's Forever database, datamined beta game data checked October 12; higher ranks hit harder or last longer. Shots work from 8 to 35 yards.
| Ability | Level | Cooldown | Use it to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aimed Shot | 20 | 6 sec | Land a big hit with a 2-second cast. Baseline in Forever. |
| Arcane Shot | 6 | 6 sec | Deal instant damage on the move. It no longer shares Aimed Shot's cooldown. |
| Concussive Shot | 8 | 12 sec | Slow a target by 50% for 4 seconds before it reaches you. |
| Wing Clip | 12 | None | Slow a melee attacker by 50% for 10 seconds (60% at the top rank). Melee range. |
| Scatter Shot | 30 | 30 sec | Talent. Disorient a target for 4 seconds from up to 15 yards. Any damage breaks it. |
| Freezing Trap | 20 | 30 sec | Freeze the first enemy that comes close for up to 10 seconds. Damage breaks the ice. |
| Frost Trap | 28 | 30 sec | Create a 30-second ice slick that slows enemies within 10 yards by 60%. |
| Scorpid Sting | 22 | None | Cut a target's chance to hit by 2% for 20 seconds. In Forever it no longer lowers Strength and Agility. |
| Viper Sting | 36 | 15 sec | Drain a healer's or caster's Mana over 8 seconds. |
| Feign Death | 30 | 30 sec | Fake your death so enemies may ignore you. |
| Rapid Fire | 26 | 5 min | Attack 40% faster with ranged and melee attacks for 15 seconds. |
| Deterrence | 20 | 5 min | Talent. Gain 25% Dodge and Parry chance for 10 seconds when melee catches you. |
| Aspect of the Cheetah | 20 | None | Run 30% faster between fights. Any damage dazes you for 4 seconds. |
| Flare | 32 | 15 sec | Reveal stealthed and invisible enemies within 10 yards of a spot up to 30 yards away, for 30 seconds. |
Multi-Shot (level 18) hits 3 targets and shares Aimed Shot's 6-second cooldown. Your Fire traps are Immolation Trap (level 16), which burns one enemy over 15 seconds, and Explosive Trap (level 34), which hits everyone within 10 yards.
How the dead zone and traps work
Since October 15, Auto Shot needs you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before firing. It can still fire while you cast Aimed Shot or Sniper Shot. Plan each stop where you can keep your distance.
- Dead zone: within 8 yards of an enemy your ranged abilities do not work. Wing Clip, Strider Kick and Counterattack are melee attacks, and Wowhead lists Scatter Shot's 15-yard range with no minimum.
- Traps: usable in combat but placed only where you stand. A trap lasts 1 minute and is set off by the first enemy to come close. Frost traps (Freezing, Frost) and Fire traps (Immolation, Explosive) have separate 30-second cooldowns, and October 15 explicitly allows one active Fire Trap and one active Ice Trap at the same time.
- Stuns and interrupts: Blizzard's class summary says Hunters cannot stun or interrupt, but Wowhead's Forever data lists two 3-second talent stuns: Intimidation, through your pet, and a chance on Improved Concussive Shot. Tauren also have War Stomp.
Hunter pets for PvP
Pets now take stats from your gear, and player buffs that raise stats no longer work on them. Tame Beast does not work on beasts above your level. Every family learns Bite or Claw (some both) and Dive or Dash, plus one ability no other family has. Unless an October 15 amendment is noted, values and cooldowns below are the first rank from Wowhead's datamined Forever data checked October 12.
| Family | Ability | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Crocolisk | Dismember (15 sec) | Cuts the target's healing by 25% for 6 seconds (October 15). |
| Bat | Sonic Blast (1 min) | Spells take 30% longer to cast for 20 seconds (October 15). |
| Bird of Prey | Mine! (90 sec) | Disarms the target for 3 seconds (October 15). |
| Spider | Web (40 sec) | Immobilizes the target and deals Nature damage over 4 seconds, from 20 yards. |
| Boar | Charge (25 sec) | Charges from 8–25 yards and immobilizes for 1 second. |
| Crab | Pinch (30 sec) | Slows movement by 50% for 9 seconds. |
| Hyena | Tendon Rip (30 sec) | Slows movement by 50% and bleeds the target for 9 seconds. |
| Carrion Bird | Demoralizing Screech (10 sec) | Lowers the melee Attack Power of enemies next to the pet for 30 seconds. |
| Turtle | Shell Shield (3 min) | Your pet takes 50% less damage for 12 seconds but attacks more slowly. |
Other families add damage (Bear, Gorilla, Raptor, Scorpid, Wind Serpent's 20-yard Lightning Breath), stealth (Cat), lower armor (Tallstrider) or party melee Attack Power (Wolf's Furious Howl). Foxes are new: Trickster's Dance raises the pet's dodge chance and attack speed for 12 seconds.
Best racials for a Hunter
Pick your faction first, then the racial that answers what kills you most. Unchanged cooldowns are datamined Wowhead values checked October 12; the October 15 Blizzard update supplies the amendments below. The race guide compares every racial.
| Race | Racial | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Will to Survive (3 min), Perception (3 min) | Will to Survive removes all stuns on you. Perception reveals stealthed enemies for 20 seconds. Ruthless adds 2% critical strike chance. |
| Dwarf | Stoneform (3 min) | Removes and blocks bleeds, poisons and diseases, and cuts physical damage by 10% for 8 seconds. Earth Fury adds 2% critical damage and healing. |
| Night Elf | Shadowmeld, Elune's Light (3 min) | Shadowmeld hides you while you stand still. Elune's Light adds 10% critical strike chance for 15 seconds. |
| High Order Skyborne | Read Ley Line, Wind Blessed | Read Ley Line gives 100% more Health and Mana regeneration. Wind Blessed adds 3% haste. October 15 sets Read Ley Line's minimum duration to 30 seconds and allows casting while moving. |
| Orc | Hardiness, Blood Fury (3 min) | Stuns on you last 20% less; Blood Fury adds 10% Attack Power for 15 seconds. Savage adds 1% critical strike chance. |
| Tauren | War Stomp (90 sec) | Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yards for 2 seconds after a 0.5-second cast: an answer to melee in your dead zone. Endurance now adds 2% critical damage and healing. |
| Troll | Berserking (3 min) | 10% attack speed for 10 seconds, and Regeneration bonuses rise to 20% (October 15). |
| Windshaper Skyborne | Skysight (2 min), Wind Blessed | Skysight adds 10% run speed. Wind Blessed adds 3% haste. Skysight can now be cast while moving. |
Fight tips
- Against melee inside 8 yardsDrop Frost Trap at your feet and move away while the attacker is slowed by 60%; with Entrapment it is also rooted. Wing Clip and Strider Kick buy the rest of the distance.
- Protecting your healerTraps go only where you stand, so step between the attacker and your healer before you drop one. Send a Boar's Charge or a Spider's Web to root the attacker on the way in.
- Against healersYou have no interrupt. Send a Crocolisk at the target your team is killing, since Dismember cuts its healing by 25% for 6 seconds on a 15-second cooldown. A Bat's Sonic Blast makes casts 30% slower for 20 seconds, then has a 1-minute cooldown.
- Against Warriors and RoguesScorpid Sting lowers their chance to hit, and Aspect of the Monkey adds Dodge. Deterrence adds 25% Dodge and Parry, and a Bird of Prey's Mine! disarms for 3 seconds on a 90-second cooldown.
- Guarding a flag or baseLay a Freezing Trap where you stand before enemies arrive; it lasts 1 minute. Flare (level 32) reveals stealthed attackers within 10 yards of the spot you target, and Humans have Perception.
Recent Hunter changes
- Tame Beast stopped working on beasts above your level. Furious Howl's Attack Power bonus dropped 40%, and Sonic Blast became properly available to Bats. Unlearning Lone Wolf no longer leaves a 4% damage penalty with your pet out.
- Class preview: Aimed Shot baseline at level 20, traps usable in combat and Scorpid Sting lowers hit chance. Pets scale with your gear, every family gets a unique ability, and Foxes join. New talents include Summon Hawk, Lone Wolf, Sniper Shot and Strider Kick.
- Tameable beasts with ability ranks too high for their level were fixed, and Aggressive Mode returned to the pet tab. Deflection's Parry bonus fell to 1–5%.
- Entrapment gained diminishing returns, and with Frost Trap it fires only on the trap's first trigger. Expose Prey lasts 10 seconds. Improved Wing Clip and Improved Concussive Shot got their correct chances, and Unleashed Fury now raises pet damage. Critical strikes in PvP no longer have reduced effect.
