Where PvP happens

Battlegrounds
Team matches against the other faction, with objectives such as flag captures or base control. Forever has four: Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, Alterac Valley and the new 15 v 15 Darkspear Islands.
World PvP
Fights in the open world between players who are flagged for PvP.

Rulesets

You pick a ruleset when you create a character. Each ruleset is one large community.

  • Battlegrounds can include players from Normal, PvP and Roleplaying. Hardcore stays separate.
  • You can group, run dungeons and raid only with players on your own ruleset. Horde and Alliance cannot group together.
  • Characters cannot change ruleset, except that a Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP.
  • On the PvP ruleset, Blizzard will use Season of Discovery-style faction balance tools, which can temporarily limit character creation for one faction.

Which ruleset to pick for PvP

  • For battlegrounds, pick the ruleset your friends play, so you can group and queue together.
  • For world PvP while you level, pick PvP and accept one faction per account there.
  • Skip Hardcore for PvP: it is kept out of the shared battlegrounds, and PvP Legacy challenges cannot be completed there.

PvP flagging

Players of the other faction can attack you only while you are flagged for PvP.

  • On Normal and Roleplaying, type /pvp or right-click your portrait to turn it on.
  • On the PvP ruleset, Icy Veins says zones above level 15 are generally contested, so you are flagged almost constantly from then on. Blizzard has not published a zone list.
  • Since September 24, a Rogue who uses Sap on a flagged player becomes flagged too.
