WoW Forever Warlock PvP Guide
Warlocks wear enemies down with damage over time, Fear and Curses while a demon guards them. In WoW Forever, Agony and Doom become Banes, demons scale from your stats, and Life Tap scales with Spirit.
- PvP roles
- Ranged damage with control: Fear, Curses and a demon in every tree
- Alliance races
- Gnome, Human
- Horde races
- Orc, Troll, Undead
- Strengths
- Damage that competes with any other spellcaster, in three styles: damage over time and drains, demon power, or Shadow and Fire burst
- Weakness
- Physically weak, so you depend on your demon for protection
Warlock talents for PvP
Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. At the beta's level 30 cap you have 21 points, or a few more with the Legacy perk Talented: enough for a tree's 21-point talent, not its 31-point capstone. Dual Specialization opens at level 40. Talent effects below are from Blizzard's October 7 class preview, with cooldowns, durations and a few values from Wowhead's datamined Forever data checked October 12.
Affliction: damage over time and drains
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Grim ReachRow 2 | Replaces Malediction on October 15. Increases Affliction spell range by 10/20%; the old periodic damage bonus is removed. |
| Shadow Mastery | October 15 increases the Shadow damage bonus to 2/4/6/8/10%. |
| Improved DrainsRow 2 | Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack drain or deal up to 20% more. |
| PandemicRow 3 | Up to 100% more critical strike damage bonus for Corruption, Bane of Agony, Drain Life, Drain Soul, Siphon Life and Wrack. |
| Curse of Exhaustion16-point talent | Slows the target's movement by 30% for 12 seconds. Moved up to row 4. |
| NightfallRow 4 | Gives instant Shadow Bolts, and now also triggers from Drain Soul and Wrack. |
| MalevolenceRow 4 | Up to 5% more critical strike chance for your Shadow spells. |
| Soul SiphonRow 5 | Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack gain up to 12% for each of your other Affliction spells on the target, up to 36%. |
The new 31-point talent, Wrack, is a Shadow drain that makes your other Shadow damage-over-time effects hit the target 10% harder for 6 seconds.
Demonology: stronger demons and Soul Link
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Improved Health FunnelRow 1 | Health Funnel transfers more health and works whatever your demon's health. |
| Fel VitalityRow 2 | Up to 15% more health and Mana for your demons, and up to 15% more maximum Mana for you. |
| Demonic EnergiesRow 2 | Your spell damage heals your demon for up to 15% of the damage. Your demon also gains up to 100% of the Mana you get from Life Tap. |
| Demonic Sacrifice11-point talent | Sacrifice your demon for a 2-hour effect: more Shadow damage (Imp), Mana restored (Voidwalker), more Fire damage (Succubus) or health restored (Felhunter). |
| Fel Domination16-point talent | Your next summon casts 6 seconds faster for half the Mana; 5-minute cooldown. Requires Master Summoner, now in row 3. |
| Soul Link21-point talent | Your demon takes 30% of the damage you take, and you both deal 3% more damage. Was the 31-point talent. |
| Improved FelhunterRow 5 | Spell Lock's cooldown is 2 seconds shorter. Tainted Blood, Devour Magic's healing and Paranoia improve by 10%. |
| Master Demonologist | New bonus while each demon is out: more Fire damage (Imp), less Physical damage taken (Voidwalker), more Shadow damage (Succubus) or less Magic damage taken (Felhunter). |
Demonic Pact, the 31-point talent, requires Soul Link and keeps your Demonic Sacrifice effect when you summon a different demon.
Destruction: Shadow and Fire burst
| Talent | What it does |
|---|---|
| Molten SkinRow 2 | Reduces all damage you take by up to 10%. |
| Conflagrate16-point talent | Instant Fire damage to a target with your Immolate, consuming it; 10-second cooldown. Moved up to row 4. |
| Aftermath | Immolate's first hit does up to 50% more damage, and Conflagrate has up to a 100% chance to Daze the target: 50% slower for 5 seconds. |
| Destructive Reach | October 15 sets the Destruction spell range bonus to 10/20%. |
| Intensity | All Destruction spells now resist cast-time loss when you are hit, not just Rain of Fire, Hellfire and Soul Fire. Now 3 points. |
| Fire and BrimstoneRow 5 | Raises Conflagrate's critical strike chance. Requires Conflagrate. |
| Bane of Havoc21-point talent | For 5 minutes, 15% of the damage you deal to other targets also hits the Havoc target. One target at a time, and it counts as your Bane on that target. |
The 31-point talent, Incinerate, requires Bane of Havoc.
Which tree to play
- Affliction is our starting pick for battlegrounds. Your damage keeps ticking while you move, and Curse of Exhaustion slows melee attackers. Improved Drains and Soul Siphon turn Drain Life into a real heal.
- Destruction trades that for burst. Conflagrate with Aftermath slows by 50%, Intensity helps your casts resist pushback, and Molten Skin cuts damage taken. Bane of Havoc keeps hurting a priority target while you hit others.
- Demonology gets stronger later. Soul Link moves 30% of your damage taken to your demon, but the Felhunter learns Spell Lock only at level 36 and Demonic Pact needs 31 points. It suits a second set once Dual Specialization opens at level 40.
Key Warlock abilities
Unless an October 15 amendment is noted, values are the first rank from Wowhead's Forever database, datamined beta game data checked October 12; higher ranks hit harder. Curses and Banes have their own table below.
| Ability | Level | Cooldown | Use it to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fear | 8 | None | Send a target running for up to 10 seconds (15 from level 32) after a 1.5-second cast. Damage may break it, and only one target can be Feared at a time. |
| Howl of Terror | 40 | 40 sec | Make up to 5 enemies within 10 yards flee for 10 seconds after a 2-second cast. |
| Death Coil | 42 | 2 min | Instantly make the target run in horror for 3 seconds and heal yourself for the Shadow damage it deals. |
| Corruption | 4 | None | Put Shadow damage over 12 seconds on a target. Rank 1 has a 2-second cast. |
| Immolate | 1 | None | Hit for Fire damage plus more over 15 seconds; 2-second cast. Conflagrate needs it on the target. |
| Shadowburn | 20 | 15 sec | Destruction talent. Finish a target with instant Shadow damage for a Soul Shard, which comes back if it dies within 8 seconds. |
| Drain Life | 14 | None | Channel for 5 seconds within 20 yards, taking 10 health per second from the target (22 at level 30). |
| Siphon Life | 30 | None | Affliction talent. Instantly drain 11 health every 3 seconds for 30 seconds. |
| Life Tap | 6 | None | Turn health into Mana instantly: 30 plus your Spirit at rank 1, 140 plus Spirit from level 26. |
| Drain Soul | 10 | None | Channel Shadow damage for 15 seconds and collect Soul Shards. Starting another cast stops it. |
| Create Healthstone | 10 | None | Spend a Soul Shard on a stone that restores 120 health instantly (300 from level 22). |
Train every Shadow Bolt rank: since October 8, ranks 1–4 are rebalanced so each new rank is an upgrade. Hellfire (level 30) burns you and nearby enemies, and can critically strike since October 1.
Demons in Forever
Pick your demon before the fight. Every summon is a 10-second cast, all but the Imp cost a Soul Shard, and since October 8 your current demon is stunned while you summon a new one. Demons now scale from your own stats (October 7 preview), and Aggressive mode is back under the pet tab of your spellbook (October 1).
| Demon | Level | PvP tool |
|---|---|---|
| Imp | 1 | Phase Shift (level 12, 10 sec cooldown): the Imp cannot be attacked unless it attacks. |
| Voidwalker | 10 | Sacrifice (level 16): the Voidwalker dies and shields you for 319 damage for 30 seconds. Damage cannot interrupt your casts while the shield holds. |
| Succubus | 20 | Seduction (level 26): a 1.5-second cast that stops a Humanoid acting for up to 15 seconds. Any damage breaks it. |
| Felhunter | 30 | Devour Magic (level 30, 8 sec cooldown) strips one magic buff from an enemy or one magic debuff from an ally. Spell Lock (level 36, 30 sec cooldown) silences for 3 seconds and locks a countered school for 6. |
Banes and Curses
Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Banes, the damaging effects; Curses are the utility ones. Each target can carry one of your Banes (Blizzard's rule) and one of your Curses (Wowhead's Curse tooltips). Effects that worked on Curses now also work on Banes, and Curse of Shadows was removed.
| Bane or Curse | Level | Type | What it does at rank 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bane of Agony | 8 | Bane | 72 Shadow damage over 24 seconds, slow at first and building up. |
| Bane of Havoc | Talent | Bane | Destruction talent. 15% of your damage to other targets also hits this one, for 5 minutes. |
| Bane of Doom | 60 | Bane | Cannot be cast on players. |
| Curse of Weakness | 4 | Curse | The target's physical damage drops by 4 for 2 minutes (12 at level 22). |
| Curse of Recklessness | 14 | Curse | Lowers armor by 175, but the target ignores Fear and Horror effects. Never use it on someone you plan to Fear or Death Coil. |
| Curse of the Elements | 20 | Curse | Now covers all magic: 4% more Magic damage taken for 5 minutes (6% at level 30). |
| Curse of Tongues | 26 | Curse | The target's spells take 50% longer to cast for 30 seconds. |
| Curse of Exhaustion | Talent | Curse | Affliction talent. Slows movement by 30% for 12 seconds. |
Life Tap, Soul Shards and stones
- Life Tap: scales with Spirit, and its tooltip now shows the right health cost (fixed September 24) and Mana from Spirit (October 7 preview). Read it to see what each press costs.
- Spirit and talents: Demonic Embrace no longer lowers your Spirit, The Human Spirit gives Humans 5% more, and Improved Life Tap is now in Affliction's first row.
- Soul Shards: Drain Soul has a chance each tick to give a shard, rising until one is certain. Shards pay for most summons, Healthstones, Shadowburn and your stones.
- Firestone and Spellstone: now weapon imbues that stack with temporary enchantments such as Wizard Oil. A Lesser Firestone (level 28) adds 1% spell critical strike chance and up to 10 Fire damage. A Spellstone (level 36) adds 1% spell haste and up to 14 Shadow damage.
Best racials for a Warlock
Pick your faction first, then the racial that answers what kills you most. Unchanged cooldowns are datamined Wowhead values checked October 12; the October 15 Blizzard update supplies the amendments below. The race guide compares every racial.
| Race | Racial | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Will to Survive (3 min) | Removes all stuns on you. The Human Spirit adds 5% Spirit, which raises Life Tap. Ruthless adds 2% critical strike chance. |
| Gnome | Escape Artist (2 min), Eureka! (2 min) | Escape Artist breaks roots and snares and blocks them for 3 seconds. Expansive Mind adds 5% maximum Mana. Eureka! now lasts 8 seconds with no charges: damaging spells cost 10% less Mana and deal 10% more damage. Periodic effects get no bonus, but channels such as Drain Life do. |
| Orc | Blood Fury (3 min), Shatter Curse (3 min) | Blood Fury adds 10% spell power for 15 seconds. Shatter Curse dispels Curses and Banes and reduces magic damage taken by 5% for 8 seconds; it no longer prevents new applications. Hardiness shortens stuns on you by 20%. Savage adds 1% critical strike chance. |
| Undead | Will of the Forsaken (2 min), Cannibalize (2 min) | Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep, with no immunity afterwards. Cannibalize restores 35% of your health and Mana over 10 seconds from a Humanoid or Undead corpse within 5 yards; moving or taking damage stops it. Since October 15, Will of the Forsaken is unavailable during Scatter Shot. |
| Troll | Berserking (3 min) | 10% faster casting for 10 seconds. Troll Warlocks are new in Forever. |
Fight tips
- Against Warriors and RoguesSlow them with Curse of Exhaustion (Affliction) or a Conflagrate Daze (Destruction), then Fear when they close in, unless a Warrior has Berserker Rage up. A Voidwalker's Sacrifice shield lets you finish casts while you are hit.
- Against healersCurse of Tongues makes their spells 50% slower to cast. A Succubus can Seduce a Humanoid healer for up to 15 seconds, so keep your damage-over-time effects off that target.
- Against castersThe Felhunter's Devour Magic strips a magic buff from an enemy or a magic debuff from a teammate. From level 36 its Spell Lock silences for 3 seconds.
- Against UndeadWill of the Forsaken removes Fear but no longer gives immunity afterwards, so your next Fear can land.
- Against OrcsShatter Curse dispels your Curses and Banes but no longer grants immunity. Reapply if pressure calls for it; its 5% magic damage reduction lasts 8 seconds.
Recent Warlock changes

- Class preview: Agony and Doom became Banes, Curse of the Elements covers all magic and Curse of Shadows is gone. Firestone and Spellstone became weapon imbues, demons scale from your stats, and most talents moved or changed.
